Communication Project part C2a.

I decided to study to better myself in the long run. I was lucky to come across this course to help me achieve my goals.I want to become a geologist . I love exploring and collecting rocks. My other interest include atmospheric sciences and surfing. Whilst to the observer I have chosen a mixed bag for interest, they all tie in well. The waves shapes are formed with a mix of atmospheric condition and sea floor geology. The end result is a wave wich is predictable and fun to ride.

Every time before you make a purchase there is a phase when the world is yours. For example if you are planning to buy a car and have not yet finalized your car then you can regard all car models and think I can own this one tomorrow. Hello Everyone, This is my new wiki homepage.

Just a little about me to start with. I am 29, single boy living in Dysdale Victoria. I am at CDU to progress my academic learning so to be worthy of university.This step so late in life is because I really want to become a Geologist, which require a fairly decent TER score. I was lucky enough to join the CDU tertairy enabling programme and hope to do well enough to live my dream of studying next year, and working simaltaniously in the feild as an Exploration Geologist which untill now has been limited to working as a geologists feild assistant.

Gartner Research projected in 2005 that wikis will be used in at least 50% of all corporations by 2009. The table below includes just a few examples of corporate wikis. Creating or maintaining a wiki? Here you will find tips to keep your wiki running at its full potential.

Don't restrict your Wiki to approved authors-only. Some of the best contributions will come from your member base and some will even come from anonymous posters.
Delete useless pages. Wikis can easily become cluttered with new user "test pages".
Don't be afraid to ask from help. If you need help with a page or section, your contributors or potential contributors may need someone to call it out.

Welcome to wiki.wetpaint.com, the wiki where you can talk about wikis. Yes, that's right: wikis. Don't know what a wiki is? Well, neither do 84% of U.S. Internet users, according to a July 2007 poll by polling company Harris Interactive for wetpaint.com, aka wikisphere.com. If 84% of U.S. Internet users don't know what a wiki is, then you can bet that the percentage is even higher in the U.S. population as a whole, since not everyone uses the Internet. You can also bet that the percentage is higher in most other industrialized countries, since the U.S. is among the most Internet-friendly.

Now why is this important? Because according to alexa.com the eighth most visited Web site is, yes, a wiki. What's the name of that wiki? Wikipedia. You've probably heard about it, since according to a comScore study 26% of U.S. Internet users visited Wikipedia at least once during July 2007 alone. And that's one month only.

Now why is Wikipedia important to you, the Internet user? Because except for Russia and Czechia (the Czech Republic), the search engine called Google is the Web search market share leader in every country in North America and the whole of Europe, according to an August 2007 article on The Economist about Google. According to the same article, this is also true for every country in Asia except for Japan, South Korea and China.

What does Google have to do with Wikipedia? It's that most of the time you enter a technical term in Google, a result from Wikipedia shows up in the first search engine results page (SERP). Wikipedia, in turn, gets about three fifths of its inbound traffic from Google, according to Internet statistics company Hitwise.

What does this have to do with wikis? Since only 16% of U.S. Internet users know what a wiki is, but a much higher percentage of them have read content created on Wikipedia, either on Wikipedia itself or one of its many mirroring Web sites, this means many people, probably more than half of Wikipedia content readers, don't know that Wikipedia is a wiki, and thus they don't know how Wikipedia content is created. If you don't know how Wikipedia content is created, then you also don't know how to estimate its reliability.

What's the hyperonym for Wikipedia that most people think of first? It's encyclopedia, not wiki. Why? Because Wikipedia's slogan mentions the word encyclopedia, not wiki. And most people, unfortunately, believe in that slogan: They think Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, despite the fact that it's not edited by encyclopedists as we know them but by laymen, who don't know the ABCs of encyclopedism (yes, that's a word - I checked).

Don't write too much text for your readers to keep reading about. They don't want to read and read, so enter some pictures too. Make everything not one color and make sure the text color is very readable.	i wiki at www.elanakoko.wetpaint.com
Be careful not to over-moderate your wiki. What attracts contributors is their ability to influence the document. If you take that away, they'll have no incentive to contribute.
If you go in and start the wiki out with a fixed structure, people may feel like they're doing data entry. Allow the wiki to get a little unstructured for a while and let the structure reveal itself through many small changes instead of imposing one by moving and organizing every page.	Matt from EditMe
Once your wiki gets fairly big, shift the focus from navigation (which will undoubtedly be unweildy at this point) to search. Put a big search box on the home page and let people find what they're looking for that way. Prompt them to create a page if they didn't find it.	Matt from EditMe

Give a demo of an existing Wiki
Bring an expert to explain how the collaboration can be improved
Brainstorm with the potential users to understand the apprehensions
Have a clearly defined, relatively narrow and clearly communicated purpose or goal for the wiki.	Matt from EditMe
Move some information to the wiki that the group you want to use it relies on. This will get them using it right away.	Matt from EditMe
Don't start with a blank slate - but don't create tons of empty pages either. You want to hint at proposed content enough to encourage group members to participate but not overwhelm them with the task.	Matt from EditMe

Wetpaint.com for nearly all of your wiki needs, of course! If you want to contribute to something on a larger scale, then contributing to an article at Wikipedia is a noble thing to do. If you are really ambitious, why not contribute to a textbook at Wikibooks. Of course, it won't be as simple and fun as Wetpaint, which is why I continue to wiki here.	Kevin (aka flattail)
